Dr. Marion H. Martinez is an accomplished professional who exemplifies an instructional leader. In her most recent professional role as superintendent of the Binghamton City School District, Dr. Marion H. Martinez worked to implement programs that improved the literacy of elementary school students. While in Binghamton, Dr. Martinez convened a Literacy Task Force to more closely examine the reading/writing approach in the district and the role parents can play in helping their children become stronger readers and writers.
With a 75% poverty rate and 25% mobility rate, many children do not have access to quality preschool programs. Readiness and full day kindergarten programs focus strongly on how parents can support their children. Statistics show a child whose family reads aloud at home is more likely to become a successful reader. Practicing reading with parents or guardians, especially prior to enrollment in elementary school, exposes children to word enunciation, enhances concentration skills, and introduces them to sentence structure. Together, these factors make it easier for children to grasp the concepts by expanding their vocabularies which also impacts their writing.
Dr. Martinez strongly supported the writer's workshop model developed by Lucy Caulkins from Columbia University. It focuses on the integration of reading and writing while placing some of the responsibility for learning on the student. Teachers were strong supporters of the model and frequently expressed surprise at how well students' writing developed by surpassing their expectations.
